The Platypus Cometh!

Years ago, when I sat on a computer all day for a living, I used to read various online newspapers whenever things got too slow.

That’s how I first encountered the “My Cage” comic strip while perusing the online edition of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.  Since that time the paper has gone to strict online publishing and the “My Cage” comic strip, by Ed Power and Melissa DeJesus (he writes it and she draws it), has been re-run on for the past half dozen years. The comic strip ended its initial run almost 6 years ago.

Although the “My Cage” characters have never achieved the lofty status of Dilbert, Garfield, or Blondie, their fanbase, however limited, remains stalwart and vigorous.

Here’s a sample of why Power and DeJesus are so fervently admired…

My Cage 11 Cute Force

Norm, the central character, is a frustrated screenplay writer and all-around Millenial geek, employed at McGuffin, Inc. He’s married to the love of his life, Bridget, who happens to be a dog (literally,) and they’re pregnant. Norm has a pet amoeba, named “Squishy.”

His co-workers include Maureen, a gold-digging female fox, Ashley, a bisexual goth bengal tiger who’s long been his “office spouse” and Violet, a bitter chihuahua receptionist who’s married to another co-worker who’s a typical “man’s man” Doberman Pinscher, full of empty male bragidoccio. Max, the office manager is a satanic terrier, who enjoys his martinis so much he prefers them to work…

In short, this gang is about as far away from “Dondi” or “Peanuts” as you can get.  I love ’em.

Even better, Power and DeJesus have re-booted the premise and the new “My Cage” run of comics is now available at If you visit, you will be asked to consider subscribing for a modest voluntary donation. I happen to think it’s worth it.

In the coming weeks a few samples of the new “My Cage” will be posted here. Please seriously consider checking it out. What follows are just a few select examples of this exceptional duo’s art…

My Cage 3

My Cage 5

That’s it for now! I have hopes of posting at least one movie review in the next couple of weeks and possibly another book review as well.

Please have a safe summer and I look forward to welcoming you here again real soon!
